Target Information
Nitric oxide (NO) is an inorganic, gaseous free radical that mediates various cellular functions including vasorelaxation, neurotransmission, and cytotoxicity.
NO production is catalyzed by nitric oxide synthase (NOS) enzymes, which convert L-arginine to L-citrulline and NO.
Three isoforms of NOS have been identified:
- Neuronal NOS (nNOS, type I)
- Endothelial NOS (eNOS, type III)
- Inducible NOS (iNOS, type II)
All NOS isoforms contain calmodulin, NADPH, FAD, and FMN binding domains.
