PGA5 (Pepsinogen 5, group I / Pepsinogen A)
Pepsinogens are inactive precursors of pepsin, a major acid protease found in the stomach. Pepsin is a single polypeptide chain derived from pepsinogen by removal of a 41 amino acid segment from the N-terminus.
Pepsinogen synthesis occurs in the stomach lining, and hydrochloric acid is required to activate the enzyme and maintain optimal acidity (pH 1–3).
Pepsin effectively cleaves peptide bonds involving aromatic amino acids, showing broad specificity. PGA5 belongs to the A1 subfamily of the pepsin family and is the predominant endopeptidase in vertebrate gastric juice. It is inhibited by ovUS-1, a uterine serpin.
