Target Information

Cytokeratins (CK) are intermediate filaments of epithelial cells, found in both keratinizing tissues (e.g., skin) and non-keratinizing cells (e.g., mesothelial cells). Although not typical markers for endothelial cells, cytokeratins have been detected in some microvascular endothelial cells.
At least 20 cytokeratin types (40–70 kDa, pI 5–8.5) can be identified via two-dimensional gel electrophoresis.
Biochemically, CKs are divided into two classes:

  • Type I: Acidic polypeptides
  • Type II: Basic polypeptides

Each epithelial cell expresses at least one member from each class.
Monoclonal antibodies to cytokeratin proteins are valuable markers for tumor identification and classification.
