Target Information
Cytokeratins (CK) are intermediate filaments of epithelial cells, present in both keratinizing tissues (e.g., skin) and non-keratinizing cells (e.g., mesothelial cells). Although not typical endothelial markers, cytokeratins have been detected in some microvascular endothelial cells. At least 20 different cytokeratins, ranging from 40–70 kDa with isoelectric points between 5–8.5, can be identified by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis.
Biochemically, CKs are divided into two classes:
- Type I: acidic polypeptides
- Type II: basic polypeptides
All epithelial cells express at least one member from each class. Monoclonal antibodies against cytokeratin proteins are valuable tools for tumor identification and classification.
