Target Information
Cytokeratins (CK) are intermediate filaments of epithelial cells, found in both keratinizing tissues (e.g., skin) and non-keratinizing cells (e.g., mesothelial cells). Although not typical endothelial markers, cytokeratins are also detected in some microvascular endothelial cells.
There are at least 20 different cytokeratins with molecular weights of 40–70 kDa and isoelectric points of 5–8.5. They are biochemically classified into two groups: type I (acidic polypeptides) and type II (basic polypeptides). Each epithelial cell expresses at least one member from each class.
Monoclonal antibodies against cytokeratin proteins serve as useful markers for tumor identification and classification.
