Target Information
Cytokeratins (CK) are intermediate filaments of epithelial cells, found in both keratinizing tissues (e.g., skin) and non-keratinizing cells (e.g., mesothelial cells). Although not traditional endothelial markers, cytokeratins are also present in some microvascular endothelial cells.
There are at least 20 different cytokeratins ranging from 40–70 kDa with isoelectric points of 5–8.5, identifiable via two-dimensional gel electrophoresis.
Cytokeratins are classified into two types: type I (acidic polypeptides) and type II (basic polypeptides). Each epithelial cell expresses at least one member from both families.
Monoclonal antibodies to cytokeratin proteins serve as useful markers for tumor identification and classification.
