Target Information
Coagulation factor V (Proaccelerin) is an essential component of the blood coagulation cascade. It circulates in plasma and is converted to its active form by thrombin-mediated release of the activation peptide. The active factor V consists of a heavy and a light chain linked by calcium ions, and functions as a cofactor with activated factor X to convert prothrombin to thrombin.
Defects in the Factor V gene are associated with various disorders including Factor V deficiency, thrombophilia (activated protein C resistance), Budd-Chiari syndrome, ischemic stroke, and recurrent pregnancy loss.
