Target Information
Glucagon is a 29-residue polypeptide hormone (MW 3482) produced in the pancreas. A related hormone, enteroglucagon (oxyntomodulin), produced in the intestinal mucosa, extends the glucagon sequence by 8 residues at the C-terminus.
Biological activities of pancreatic glucagon include glycogenolysis, lipolysis, gluconeogenesis, and ketogenesis — effects antagonistic to insulin, leading to increased blood glucose levels.
Immunocytochemical studies show glucagon localized in alpha (A) cells, comprising 15–20% of pancreatic islet cells. These cells are typically found at the periphery of islets. Glucagon-related pathologies are mainly associated with glucagon-secreting tumors (glucagonomas).
Glucagon-specific antibodies are valuable as cell and tumor markers in immunohistochemical studies and as analytical tools for hormone quantification.
