Target Information

Hepatocyte Growth Factor (HGF) regulates cell growth, motility, and morphogenesis through activation of the c-Met receptor tyrosine kinase signaling cascade. Secreted by mesenchymal cells, HGF acts as a multifunctional cytokine primarily on epithelial cells. It promotes:

• Mitogenesis
• Cell motility
• Matrix invasion

These functions contribute to angiogenesis, tumorogenesis, and tissue regeneration. HGF is secreted as an inactive single polypeptide and cleaved by serine proteases into a 69-kDa alpha-chain and a 34-kDa beta-chain, forming an active heterodimer via disulfide bonding. It belongs to the plasminogen subfamily of S1 peptidases but lacks detectable protease activity.
Alternative splicing produces multiple isoforms.
