Target Information

The TRPM5 gene encodes a member of the transient receptor potential (TRP) protein family, a diverse group of ion channel proteins.
This protein plays a key role in taste transduction and functions as a calcium-activated, non-selective cation channel that conducts Na⁺, K⁺, and Cs⁺ ions but not Ca²⁺ ions.
It is activated by low intracellular Ca²⁺ concentrations and inhibited by higher levels.
TRPM5 is also temperature-sensitive, showing increased inward currents between 15–35°C.
The gene is located within the Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome critical region-1 on chromosome 11p15.5 and is imprinted, expressed only from the paternal allele.
