Target Information
Heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoproteins (hnRNPs) are RNA-binding proteins that associate with nascent RNA polymerase II transcripts and play key roles in transcript-specific packaging and alternative splicing of pre-mRNAs.
The M1–M4 proteins form a cluster of four abundant hnRNPs that bind pre-mRNA in vivo and poly(G)/poly(U) RNA homopolymers in vitro.
They belong to the ribonucleoprotein consensus sequence family, showing similarity to RNA-binding proteins in Saccharomyces cerevisiae.
M proteins possess a unique methionine-arginine (MR) hexapeptide repeat motif, similar to that found in the 64 kDa subunit of cleavage stimulation factor involved in 3'-end maturation of pre-mRNAs.
Proteins immunologically related to M are found across diverse eukaryotic species from human to yeast.
