Target Information
CD34 is a highly glycosylated monomeric surface protein (111–115 kDa) expressed on many stem cell populations. It serves as a stem cell marker and may function as a surface receptor involved in adhesion, differentiation, and proliferation of hematopoietic stem cells and progenitors. CD34 expression represents a specific developmental state and may influence stem cell attachment to the bone marrow extracellular matrix or stromal cells. It may also act as a scaffold for glycan attachment and participate in selectin-mediated interactions. Phosphorylation by protein kinase C suggests a possible role in signal transduction.
Diseases associated with CD34 dysfunction include dermatofibrosarcoma and neurofibroma.
