T21/8 antibody binds with high affinity to a CCR5 N-terminal epitope.
CCR5 is a receptor for several inflammatory CC-chemokines including CCL3 (MIP-1α), CCL4 (MIP-1β), and RANTES.

Target Information

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and related viruses require coreceptors, in addition to CD4, to infect target cells.
CCR5, CXCR4, CCR3, CCR2b, and CCR8 are members of the chemokine receptor family that act as HIV coreceptors.
CCR5 (CC-CKR-5) is a principal coreceptor for macrophage- and dual-tropic HIV-1 strains, facilitating fusion and entry of human white blood cells.
CCR5 is required for infection by HIV-1, HIV-2, and SIV.
Beta-chemokines such as RANTES, MIP-α, and MIP-β are CCR5 ligands that prevent infection by M-tropic HIV-1.
