Product Specific Information
This antibody recognizes and binds human carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) in its purified state as well as on tissue sections.
Target Information
CEA (Carcino Embryonic Antigen, CD66e) is synthesized during fetal gut development and re-expressed in increased amounts in intestinal carcinomas and other tumors. It belongs to the immunoglobulin supergene family and contains one N domain and six immunoglobulin constant-like domains (A1–A3, B1–B3).
Antibodies to CEA are useful in identifying the origin of various metastatic adenocarcinomas and distinguishing pulmonary adenocarcinomas (60–70% CEA+) from pleural mesotheliomas (rarely or weakly CEA+).
CEA is a glycoprotein tumor marker found in adenocarcinomas of the digestive system and fetal colon. The CEA family includes cell adhesion molecules and pregnancy-specific glycoproteins located within a 1.2 Mb cluster on chromosome 19, along with eleven pseudogenes.
CEA functions as a cell-cell adhesion molecule found on leukocytes, epithelia, and endothelia, mediating both homophilic and heterophilic interactions. It is implicated in tissue differentiation, angiogenesis, apoptosis, tumor suppression, metastasis, and modulation of immune responses. Multiple transcript variants exist, though not all full-length forms are characterized.
