Target Information
Calnexin (also known as IP90, p88, p90) is an approximately 90 kDa integral membrane protein of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). It functions as a molecular chaperone involved in proper protein folding and assembly.
Calnexin associates with MHC class I heavy chains and partial complexes of T cell receptor and B cell membrane immunoglobulin, but not with completed receptor complexes.
It retains incompletely folded proteins in the ER.
Soluble ER proteins often contain a KDEL sequence for retention, while integral ER proteins like calnexin use positively charged cytosolic residues for ER localization.
Calnexin contains:
- ER luminal domain: 461 amino acids
- Transmembrane segment: 22 amino acids
- Cytoplasmic tail: 89 amino acids
