Target Information
Bone Morphogenic Proteins (BMPs) are members of the TGF-beta superfamily involved in bone and cartilage formation. Mature BMPs (30–38 kDa) adopt a TGF-beta-like cysteine knot configuration.
BMP-2 plays roles in:
- Bone formation and matrix protein production
- Stromal cell and osteoclast proliferation
- Developmental processes such as proliferation, apoptosis, differentiation, and morphogenesis
BMPs bind to a type II receptor, which recruits a type I receptor, activating the Smad signaling pathway.
