Target Information
Beta-catenin is an adherens junction (AJ) protein involved in cell-cell adhesion and epithelial layer maintenance. It interacts with E-cadherin and alpha-catenin to anchor adhesion complexes to the actin cytoskeleton. Beta-catenin also associates with cytoskeletal and signaling complexes, influencing morphogenesis and cell proliferation.
It is expressed in various hair follicle cell types and has pathological roles in pilomatrixoma, medulloblastoma, colorectal, ovarian, and other solid tumors.
In the nucleus, beta-catenin co-activates Lef/Tcf transcription factors that regulate genes such as cyclin D and c-myc, promoting cell proliferation and tumorigenesis.
