Target Information

Adducins are heteromeric proteins composed of different subunits referred to as adducin alpha, beta, and gamma. These subunits are encoded by distinct genes and belong to a family of membrane skeletal proteins involved in the assembly of the spectrin-actin network in erythrocytes and at sites of cell-cell contact in epithelial tissues.

• Expression: Alpha and gamma are ubiquitously expressed; beta is restricted to brain and hematopoietic tissues.
• Structure: Each subunit has two domains — an amino-terminal globular domain and a carboxy-terminal region containing phosphorylation sites for protein kinase C, a calmodulin-binding site, and regions required for spectrin-actin association.
• Isoforms: Alternatively spliced gamma adducin transcripts encoding different isoforms have been described, though their functions remain unknown.
• Clinical relevance: Polymorphisms in alpha and beta subunits have been linked to blood pressure regulation in animal models of hypertension.
