Target Information

Adducins are heteromeric proteins composed of alpha, beta, and gamma subunits, encoded by distinct genes. They belong to the family of membrane skeletal proteins involved in the assembly of the spectrin-actin network in erythrocytes and epithelial tissues.

• Alpha and gamma subunits are ubiquitously expressed, while beta is restricted to brain and hematopoietic tissues.
• Adducin was originally purified from human erythrocytes as a heterodimer of alpha and beta subunits.
• Polymorphisms in these subunits are associated with blood pressure regulation in animal models of hypertension.
• Heterodimers of alpha and gamma subunits have also been described.
• Each subunit has two domains: a protease-resistant globular amino-terminal region and a protease-sensitive carboxy-terminal region containing phosphorylation sites for protein kinase C, calmodulin-binding sites, and spectrin-actin association regions.
• Alternatively spliced gamma-adducin transcripts encoding different isoforms have been described, with unknown functions.
