Target Information
Activins are dimeric growth and differentiation factors belonging to the transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β) superfamily. They signal through heteromeric complexes of receptor serine kinases, including type I (I, IB) and type II (II, IIB) receptors. These transmembrane proteins possess extracellular ligand-binding domains, transmembrane regions, and cytoplasmic domains with serine/threonine kinase activity. Type I receptors mediate signaling, while type II receptors are essential for ligand binding and complex formation. Ligand binding induces phosphorylation of type I receptors by type II receptors. Mutations in Activin A are associated with fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva.
