Target Information
This gene encodes an enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of angiotensin I into angiotensin II, a physiologically active peptide. Angiotensin II acts as a potent vasopressor and aldosterone-stimulating factor, regulating blood pressure and fluid-electrolyte balance. The enzyme is a key component of the renin-angiotensin system. Variations in the presence of a 287 bp Alu repeat element within this gene have been linked to circulating enzyme levels and cardiovascular pathophysiologies. The gene produces two major isoforms—the somatic and testicular forms—both enzymatically active. Additional alternatively spliced variants have been identified but are not fully characterized.
