Target Information
Muscle myosin is a hexameric protein composed of two heavy chain subunits, two alkali light chain subunits, and two regulatory light chain subunits.
This gene encodes the beta (or slow) heavy chain subunit of cardiac myosin, expressed predominantly in normal human ventricles and in skeletal muscles rich in slow-twitch type I fibers.
Changes in the ratio of beta and alpha heavy chain subunits correlate with cardiac muscle contractile velocity.
Expression is affected by thyroid hormone levels and hemodynamic load.
Mutations in MYH7 are associated with familial hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, myosin storage myopathy, dilated cardiomyopathy, and Laing early-onset distal myopathy.
