Target Information

Methyl-CpG-binding domain protein 1 (MBD1) belongs to a family of mammalian proteins that specifically bind methylated DNA regions. It functions as a transcriptional repressor, binding to CpG islands in methylated promoters. Binding is abolished by 7-mG produced by DNA damage via methylmethanesulfonate (MMS).

MBD1 recruits AFT7IP, which in turn recruits factors such as histone methyltransferase SETDB1, contributing to gene silencing. Isoform 1 and 2 can also repress transcription from unmethylated promoters.
