Target Information

Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is a common lethal genetic disease caused by mutations of the gene coding for the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR), a cAMP-regulated chloride channel. Approximately 70% of CF cases involve deletion of phenylalanine at position 508 (ΔF508), resulting in abnormal chloride transport. This mutation often leads to lung and liver disease. Interestingly, Salmonella typhi uses CFTR to enter intestinal epithelial cells, and ΔF508 heterozygote and homozygote mice show 86% and 100% reductions in S. typhi intestinal submucosal uptake, respectively.
