Target Information

Vision involves the conversion of light into electrochemical signals that are processed by the retina and subsequently sent to and interpreted by the brain. The process begins when rhodopsin absorbs light within the retina, becoming catalytically active and activating transducin, a GTP-binding protein. Activated transducin promotes hydrolysis of cGMP by phosphodiesterase (PDE), reducing intracellular cGMP concentration and closing ion channels, leading to membrane hyperpolarization and signal transmission. Rhodopsin activity is believed to be shut off by phosphorylation followed by arrestin binding. Transducin subunit composition differs between photoreceptor cells—rod transducin (Trα, Tβ, Tγ) and cone transducin (Tcα, Tβ, Tγ)—which contributes to differing light sensitivities.
