Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene is an enzymatic component of the tricarboxylic acid (Krebs) cycle and catalyzes the formation of L-malate from fumarate. It exists in both cytosolic and N-terminal extended mitochondrial forms, differing in translation start sites. The mitochondrial form undergoes cleavage to produce the same mature protein as the cytosolic form. It functions as a homotetramer and shares similarity with thermostable class II fumarases. Mutations in this gene can cause fumarase deficiency, leading to progressive encephalopathy.
