Target Information
The protein encoded by the BCL-X gene belongs to the BCL-2 protein family. Members of this family form hetero- or homodimers and act as anti- or pro-apoptotic regulators involved in various cellular activities.
These proteins are located at the outer mitochondrial membrane and regulate the opening of the mitochondrial membrane channel (VDAC). VDAC controls mitochondrial membrane potential, reactive oxygen species production, and cytochrome C release — key factors in cell apoptosis.
Alternative splicing produces multiple transcript variants encoding two isoforms:
- Longer isoform: acts as an apoptotic inhibitor
- Shorter isoform: acts as an apoptotic activator
