Target Information
Glutamate is the main excitatory neurotransmitter in the brain. Initially, it was known to act only on ligand-gated receptor channels such as NMDA, AMPA, and kainate receptors involved in fast excitatory synaptic transmission.
Recent studies have shown that glutamate also regulates enzymes producing second messengers via metabotropic glutamate receptors coupled to G-proteins.
