Product Specific Information

MA5-15794 targets GCG in indirect ELISA and WB applications, showing reactivity with Human samples.
The immunogen is a purified recombinant fragment of human GCG expressed in E. coli.
MA5-15794 detects GCG, which has a predicted molecular weight of approximately 21 kDa.

Target Information

Glucagon is a 29-residue polypeptide hormone (MW 3482) produced in the pancreas.
A related hormone, enteroglucagon (or oxyntomodulin), produced in the mucosa of the small and large intestine, consists of the 29 amino acid sequence of pancreatic glucagon extended by 8 additional residues at the C-terminus.

The biological activities of pancreatic glucagon include:

  • Glycogenolysis
  • Lipolysis
  • Gluconeogenesis
  • Ketogenesis

These actions are antagonistic to insulin, leading to increased blood glucose levels.
Immunocytochemical studies have shown glucagon presence in A (alpha) cells, which make up 15–20% of islet cells and are located at the periphery of pancreatic islets.

Pathological manifestations of glucagon-type peptides are mainly associated with tumors or glucagonomas, as no glucagon-cell deficiency or hyperplasia states have been identified.
Glucagon-specific antibodies are useful as cell and tumor markers in immunohistochemistry and as analytical tools for hormone quantification.
