Target Information
CD14 is a 55 kDa GPI-anchored glycoprotein constitutively expressed on the surface of mature monocytes, macrophages, and neutrophils. It functions as a multifunctional lipopolysaccharide receptor and is released into serum in both secreted and cleaved forms. CD14 binds lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in a reaction catalyzed by LBP (lipopolysaccharide-binding protein). Soluble CD14 (sCD14) can discriminate structural differences between LPS molecules and plays a role in neutralizing serum lipopolysaccharides. Additionally, CD14 binds apoptotic cells and is involved in allergic, inflammatory, and infectious processes. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants encoding the same CD14 isoform. CD14 dysfunction is associated with mycobacterium chelonae infection and croup.
