Target Information
Vimentin is a developmentally regulated intermediate filament protein (IFP) found in cells of mesenchymal origin. It is involved in intracellular transport of proteins between the nucleus and plasma membrane. Vimentin, along with desmin, is expressed during early cellular development and later replaced by tissue-specific IFPs.
Vimentin plays a role in steroid synthesis by acting as a storage network for cholesterol-containing lipid droplets. Phosphorylation of vimentin by protein kinase leads to filament breakdown and cytoskeletal rearrangements that facilitate cholesterol transport to mitochondria, enhancing steroid production.
