The Integrin alpha 5 gene encodes a protein belonging to the integrin alpha chain family. Integrins are heterodimeric integral membrane proteins composed of alpha and beta chains. The alpha 5 chain undergoes post-translational cleavage in the extracellular domain, forming disulfide-linked light and heavy chains that pair with beta 1 to create a fibronectin receptor. Integrins are involved in cell adhesion and cell-surface mediated signaling.
