Target Information

BCL-2 is a key regulator of apoptosis that can inhibit or promote cell death. Members of the BCL-2 family form dimers to modulate apoptosis. Bag1 forms heterodimers with BCL-2 to enhance its anti-apoptotic effect, while Bax and Bak promote cytochrome c release from mitochondria, initiating apoptosis. Overexpression or translocation of BCL-2 is associated with follicular lymphoma, where neoplastic germinal centers express high levels of BCL-2 alpha protein. Two transcript variants exist, differing at their C-terminal ends. BCL-2 overexpression is linked to cancers such as B-cell lymphoma and prostate cancer.
