Target Information

BCL-2 is a key regulator of apoptosis that can either inhibit or promote cell death. Members of the BCL-2 family interact through dimerization to modulate apoptosis. For example, Bag1 forms a heterodimer with BCL-2, enhancing its anti-apoptotic effect. Bax and Bak are crucial for cytochrome c release from mitochondria, initiating apoptosis. Overexpression or translocation of BCL-2, such as to the Ig heavy chain locus, is associated with follicular lymphoma. High expression of BCL-2 alpha protein is observed in neoplastic germinal centers, while normal or hyperplastic centers are negative. Two transcript variants exist, differing at their C-terminal ends, and BCL-2 overexpression has been linked to cancers including B-cell lymphoma and prostate cancer.
