Target Information
The protein encoded by the BCL-X gene belongs to the BCL-2 protein family. Members of this family form hetero- or homodimers and function as anti- or pro-apoptotic regulators involved in various cellular processes. These proteins are located on the outer mitochondrial membrane and regulate the opening of the voltage-dependent anion channel (VDAC). VDAC controls mitochondrial membrane potential, reactive oxygen species production, and cytochrome C release—key events in apoptosis induction. Alternative splicing produces multiple transcript variants encoding two isoforms: the longer isoform inhibits apoptosis, while the shorter isoform promotes it.
