Target Information

Vimentin is a developmentally regulated intermediate filament protein (IFP) found in cells of mesenchymal origin. It plays a role in intracellular protein transport between the nucleus and plasma membrane.
During early development, vimentin is co-expressed with desmin and later replaced by tissue-specific IFPs. Vimentin has been implicated in steroid synthesis regulation by acting as a storage network for cholesterol-containing lipid droplets.
Phosphorylation of vimentin by protein kinase leads to intermediate filament breakdown and cytoskeletal rearrangement, facilitating lipid droplet–mitochondria interactions and promoting steroid synthesis.
