Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and function in mitochondrial protein synthesis. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein and 25% rRNA composition, differing from prokaryotic ribosomes. Mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA, and the constituent proteins vary greatly among species, hindering sequence homology recognition. The MRPL14 gene encodes a 39S subunit protein, and a pseudogene is located at 17p13.3.
