Target Information
Aipl1 was initially identified as a protein implicated in Leber congenital amaurosis (LCA), an autosomal recessive disorder caused by abnormal photoreceptor development.
Aipl1 is a tetratricopeptide repeat protein homologous to ARA9, involved in HSP90-mediated nuclear translocation and activation of the aryl hydrocarbon receptor.
It functions as part of a chaperone heterocomplex with Hsp90 and Hsp70 and associates with the cell cycle regulator NUB1.
Aipl1 cooperates with Hsp70 to suppress NUB1 inclusions, essential for normal photoreceptor maturation. Mutations disrupting these interactions lead to LCA.
At least three isoforms of Aipl1 are known to exist.
