Target Information

Calnexin (also known as IP90, p88, and p90) is an approximately 90 kDa integral membrane protein of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). It acts as a molecular chaperone, assisting in the proper folding and assembly of polypeptides into multisubunit proteins.
Calnexin associates with MHC class I heavy chains and partial complexes of the T cell receptor and B cell membrane immunoglobulin but not with completed receptor complexes.
It retains incompletely or improperly folded proteins within the ER.
Soluble ER resident proteins often contain the KDEL sequence for retention, while integral membrane ER proteins like calnexin lack KDEL but have positively charged cytosolic residues ensuring ER localization.
Calnexin consists of a large ER luminal domain (461 amino acids), a transmembrane segment (22 amino acids), and a cytoplasmic tail (89 amino acids).
