Target Information
BAF53A is an actin-related protein (ARP) that shares significant sequence identity with conventional actins. ARPs possess an actin fold with an ATP-binding cleft and are involved in cellular processes such as vesicular transport, spindle orientation, nuclear migration, and chromatin remodeling.
BAF53A encodes a 53 kDa subunit of the BAF (BRG1/brm-associated factor) complex in mammals, functionally related to the SWI/SNF complex. It aids transcriptional activation by counteracting chromatin-mediated repression and is required, along with beta-actin, for maximal ATPase activity of BRG1 and chromatin association of the BAF complex.
Three transcript variants encoding two different isoforms have been described.
