Ephrin receptors and their ligands, the ephrins, mediate numerous developmental processes, particularly in the nervous system.
Ephrins are divided into two classes: ephrin-A (EFNA), which are membrane-anchored by a glycosylphosphatidylinositol linkage, and ephrin-B (EFNB), which are transmembrane proteins.
The Eph family of receptors are grouped based on extracellular domain sequence similarity and ligand affinity. Eph receptors form the largest subgroup of the receptor tyrosine kinase (RTK) family.
The EphB6 receptor encoded by this gene lacks kinase activity and binds ephrin-B ligands.
