This antibody detects endogenous levels of total BCL-2 protein.
Target Information
BCL-2 is a key regulator of apoptosis that functions to either inhibit or promote cell death. Members of the BCL-2 family can dimerize to modulate apoptosis. For example, Bag1 forms a heterodimer with BCL-2 to enhance its anti-apoptotic effect. Bax and Bak promote cytochrome c release from mitochondria, initiating apoptosis. Overexpression or constitutive expression of BCL-2, such as translocation to the Ig heavy chain locus, is associated with follicular lymphoma. High BCL-2 expression is observed in neoplastic germinal centers of follicular lymphomas, while normal centers are negative. Two transcript variants exist, differing in the C-terminal region. Overexpression of BCL-2 has been linked to various human cancers, including B-cell lymphoma and prostate cancer.
