Target Information
Neuron specific enolase (NSE, ENO1, ENO2, ENO3) is an enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of 2-phosphoglycerate to phosphoenolpyruvate in glycolysis and the reverse reaction in gluconeogenesis. NSE is highly stable in biological fluids and can diffuse into extracellular medium and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) when neuronal membranes are injured.
NSE, also known as enolase gamma, is expressed primarily in neurons and neuroendocrine cells. Co-expression of NSE and chromogranin A is common in neuroendocrine neoplasms. Because neurons require high energy, they are rich in glycolytic enzymes such as GAPDH and NSE. Antibodies against NSE are useful for identifying neuronal cell bodies, developing neuronal lineages, and neuroendocrine cells.
Release of NSE into CSF and blood serves as a biomarker of neuronal injury. Clinically, NSE is used as a marker of neuronal damage in disorders such as stroke, hypoxic brain damage, status epilepticus, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, and herpetic encephalitis. Elevated NSE levels are also observed in certain neoplasms, including pediatric neuroblastoma and small cell lung cancer.
