Target Information
The serum amyloid A (SAA) family comprises several differentially expressed apolipoproteins, including acute-phase SAA1 and SAA2—SAA1 being the major plasma component. Although the liver is the primary site of synthesis, extrahepatic production has been reported. In vivo concentrations can increase up to 1000-fold during inflammation. SAA plays an important role in diagnosis and monitoring of various diseases. Pathological SAA levels may occur with normal CRP concentrations; SAA rises earlier and more sharply than CRP. Recent studies have expanded understanding of SAA expression and function.
