Target Information
The serum amyloid A (SAA) family comprises differentially expressed apolipoproteins, including acute-phase SAA1 and SAA2, with SAA1 being the major plasma component. Although the liver is the primary synthesis site, extrahepatic production has been observed. In vivo concentrations can increase up to 1000-fold during inflammation. SAA plays an important role in diagnosis and monitoring of various diseases. Pathological SAA values are often detected even when CRP levels are normal; SAA rises earlier and more sharply than CRP. Recent studies have expanded understanding of SAA expression and function.
