Target Information

CD206 (also known as MSR, Mannose receptor, MRC1) is a 175 kDa transmembrane protein that functions as a pattern recognition receptor. It is predominantly expressed in tissue macrophages, dendritic cells, certain endothelial cells, and sperm cells.

CD206 plays an important role in both innate and adaptive immune responses. It is also expressed on microglia and mato cells of the brain but not on astrocytes or neurons. The receptor mediates recognition and uptake of various macromolecules, including modified lipoproteins, advanced glycation end-products (AGEs), and amyloid β-protein (Aβ).

While CD206 is primarily associated with cell adhesion and host defense, it has been implicated in atherosclerosis and amyloid β deposition in Alzheimer’s disease. The CD206 gene encodes class A macrophage scavenger receptors, producing three isoforms (1, 2, and 3) through alternative splicing.

• Isoforms 1 and 2 are functional receptors mediating endocytosis of modified LDLs.
• Isoform 3 lacks endocytic activity and can inhibit isoforms 1 and 2, acting as a dominant negative regulator.

CD206 dysfunction is associated with diseases such as leprosy and Gaucher’s disease.
