Target Information
The alpha (HBA) and beta (HBB) loci determine the structure of the two types of polypeptide chains in adult hemoglobin (HbA).
Normal adult hemoglobin tetramer consists of two alpha and two beta chains.
Mutations in the beta globin gene can cause:
- Sickle cell anemia
- Beta-zero-thalassemia (absence of beta chain)
- Beta-plus-thalassemia (reduced beta globin expression)
The order of genes in the beta-globin cluster:
5′-epsilon-gamma-G-gamma-A-delta-beta-3′
