Target Information

Heterotrimeric G proteins relay signals from cell surface receptors to intracellular effectors. Each receptor detects specific extracellular stimuli such as photons, hormones, or neurotransmitters. Effectors like adenyl cyclase generate intracellular messengers. Mammalian G proteins consist of alpha, beta, and gamma subunits encoded by at least 16, 4, and 7 genes, respectively. The alpha subunits bind and hydrolyze GTP, regulating effector activity. Four main classes of Galpha subunits exist: Gs, Gi, Gq, and Galpha 12/13. The Gi class includes Galpha i-1, i-2, i-3, o, t1, t2, z, and gust, which are pertussis toxin-sensitive and function to open atrial potassium channels.
