Target Information

Phosphorylation of serine residues on I-kappa-B proteins by IKK kinases, including IKBKB, targets them for degradation via the ubiquitination pathway, enabling activation of the NF-kappa-B complex.
IKK beta (Inhibitor of nuclear factor kappa-B kinase subunit beta) is a serine kinase essential for NF-kappa-B signaling, activated by inflammatory cytokines, bacterial or viral products, DNA damage, and other cellular stresses.
It functions as part of the canonical IKK complex, phosphorylating inhibitors of NF-kappa-B on critical serine residues, leading to their polyubiquitination and proteasomal degradation. This process releases NF-kappa-B, which translocates to the nucleus to activate transcription of genes involved in immune response, growth control, and apoptosis protection.
Mutations in the IKK beta gene can result in Immunodeficiency 15 (IMD15).
