Target Information
Adipose tissue plays a major role in regulating physiological and pathological processes such as metabolism and immunity by producing and secreting bioactive molecules called adipokines.
The adiponectin/ACRP30 family and its paralogs, the C1q/tumor necrosis factor-alpha-related proteins (CTRPs) 1–7, are highly conserved.
Unlike adiponectin, which is expressed exclusively by differentiated adipocytes, CTRPs are expressed in a wide variety of tissues and are thought to regulate glucose and lipid metabolism in liver and muscle.
Structural analysis of adiponectin suggests an evolutionary link between TNF and C1q-containing proteins, indicating a shared ancestral innate immunity gene.
CTRP5 has been suggested to be involved in age-related macular degeneration.
